Let Us Give Thanks
Blanket Sunday
As the days get shorter and colder we all tend to snuggle down a bit in our covers as a shield against the winter chill. This is the time of year when the Deacons remind us that there are people very much in need of blankets, for whom they have become a luxury. Although this may sometimes mean the homeless on the streets, it can also mean the recent homeless - the people who have experienced disaster through hurricanes and earthquakes. Church World Service responds all around the world to those in need and are able to do so because of the help churches like ours provide throughout the year. This year the presentation will be made on November 9th and the collection on November 23rd. Please respond as you have for so many years.
Annual Meeting
The Semi-Annual Meeting of the congregation and corporation has been called to meet on Sunday, November 9th following the worship service. At that time we will elect our new officers and review the budget prepared by the joint meeting of our three boards and approved by the session in October. Copies of the budget will be available the morning of the meeting.
We also want to take this opportunity to thank those who have responded to the recent appeals for help in clearing the deficit of the summer, and we have made great strides, but we continue to need help if we are going to end the year “in the black.” Please consider a special donation for the Thanksgiving season. We have every confidence this will be accomplished.
Movie Night
On Friday evening, November 14th, the Fellowship Committee has planned a special time for the church family and friends. “Movie Night” will feature the film Joshua based on the best selling novel by Joseph Gilzone. Joshua is an inspirational story about a stranger whose mysterious “supernatural” powers inspire a small town. This movie is rated “G”.
The last Movie Night we had at the church in the Adult Sunday School Room there were complaints about the uncomfortable seating and small TV. It was decided to move to the 3rd Floor “Teen Room” where there are 6 couches. We’ll be watching on a large screen using a DVD projector. We should be comfortable and able to see. We’ll also be serving popcorn and soda.
Come and join us.
New Church Directory
Those who went to the coffee hour on October 19th are aware that we have started the process of doing a new church directory. The church purchased a program which is installed on one of our computers and Meghann Starn is taking pictures to be included with the information you supply on a brief profile. By keeping everything on the computer we can continue to update this program and add members as they join the church.
For those who are a bit camera shy, remember that the value of this is for those new members. How much easier to get to know your new church family when there are pictures to go with the names. We have two more dates for pictures - Nov. 16th at Coffee Hour and Nov. 23rd at the Luncheon.
Thanksgiving Luncheon
Always a favorite is the annual Thanksgiving Luncheon following worship on November 23rd. The Fellowship Committee will supply the turkey and are asking that everyone bring their favorite side dish. Mark the date and plan to be with us.
Harvest Home
Also on November 23rd we will be celebrating Harvest Home, an Opportunity for Giving during the Thanksgiving week. We will be asking members to bring items which we can distribute through our food closet for those who are less fortunate. We will encourage you to bring them to the chancel as an offering during the service, or for those who are physically unable our young people will come to your pews and bring the items forward for you. What a wonderful way to share the blessing at this Thanksgiving Season.
Thanksgiving Eve
The Vineland Ministerium will hold their annual service at St. Isidore’s Roman Catholic Church on Thanksgiving Eve. The speaker for the evening will be the Rev. Jeanette Block, the new pastor at First United Methodist Church. Our own Handbell Choir will be playing special music for the service.
Our Vineland Community has been greatly blessed and it is important that we, as a community, come together to thank God for this blessing. Please join us for this evening.
Advent Begins
The first Sunday of Advent falls in November this year, the 30th, at the end of the Thanksgiving weekend. The day before, the 29th, everyone is invited to join in the Hanging of the Greens, a yearly tradition where we all have the opportunity to take part in decorating the church for the holiday season. We start working at 9 AM and will definitely be done by Noon. Not only will you be blessed that day, but you will look at the Sanctuary in a whole new way throughout the Advent Season.
Sight and Sound
The Fellowship Committee is making plans to travel to Sight and Sound at the Millennium Theater in Strasbourg, PA to see “Behold The Lamb” on Saturday, April 25th. “Behold The Lamb is a powerful presentation of the timeless message of the Savior, that ‘whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.’” “Behold The Lamb” will show only one season.
Why are we telling you now? Because reservations must be made. The church plans to rent a 15 passenger van so we are limited to 15 people. The van will leave at 8 AM, arrive at 11 AM, and the production begins at 1 PM. Bring a box lunch with you, and plan to go to a restaurant for supper. We will be back at the church around 9 PM. The cost of the show is $54 for adults, $28 for teens (13-18), and $16 for children (3-12). Reservations must be made by Dec. 23rd.
Birthdays for November
We had a request for a posted birthday list each month. If space permits we will try to accommodate. If your name is not here, it means we do not have your birthday, so you need to call Vicky and update your records.
